Nanotech Enhanced Hair Straighteners -Super Shiny, Super Fresh!

As nanotechnology becomes more ubiquitous, we are seeing it pop up a lot more in everyday products. One product in particular that caught my attention is hair straighteners. No, I don’t own or use one, but I noticed that a few of them incorporate gold or silver nanoparticles on the heating elements. A website selling hair straighteners, claim that the ones incorporating silver nanopoarticles “leave your hair shiny, super clean and fresh - and your straightener too, so you can share it with your friends!”. I can believe this, as it has been our experience with nano silver that it can be an effective antibacterial agent. The straighteners incorporating nano gold have similar claims about shininess, which seem a little suspect to us, given that nano-gold does not exhibit the same antimicrobial properties as silver. Admittedly, the products that use nano-gold don’t claim to be antimicrobial, just that they leave your hair shiny. Again, not sure how this would work though.

Udic: The New E-dictionary from Istation

Istation has released a new electronic dictionary, the Udic. This device has many functions including audio/video, mobile TV, electronic dictionary (US, KR, JP), E-book reader, photo viewer, Wi-Fi, and 30GB or 60GB of HDD.Our Udic has three excellent unique functions: Video Dic, Audio Dic, and i-Trans. Video Dic and Audio Dic displays the lyrics to the tune you’re listening to, and translates them; i-Trans is also very useful... And you must have noticed the Udic has a swivel display (like a desktop PC). Unfortunately our E-dictionary is only available in Korea!

Robot Guitar" Creates Big Interest And Big Controversy

They're calling it the biggest advance in the electronic guitar in 70 years. But some musicians are calling it something else - cheating. What's causing all these sour notes? The world's first "robot guitar," an instrument designed to tune itself to not only be on key but also to play almost impossible to set off-standard sounds that are highly distinctive.

It took 15 years of research for the music maker, from legendary Gibson Guitar, to reach the market. And next month, a limited edition version will be going on sale. For many would be axe-men, it's a big deal. It seems some of the world's most famous rock tunes used non-standard settings to achieve their famous effects, leaving frustrated amateurs stymied in their efforts to recreate them.

Songs like the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman," Jimi Hendrix's classic "Voodoo Child," Led Zeppelin's "Going To California" and Joni Mitchell's "Circle Game" used the odd configurations, and all of them will be available instantly on the instrument.

"It will not make you a better guitar player but it will allow the average player to access some very sophisticated tunings," explains Gibson Guitar Chief Executive Henry Juszkiewicz. "Professional guitar players use a lot of different tuning and people who listen to the stars wonder why they can't reproduce the same sound themselves." Now they'll be able to, as well as perfectly retune the high tech wonder once they're done.

But the announcement has already created a backlash among some, who call it "lazy" and predict the fine art of guitar tuning by trained ears could be lost if the technology spreads.

None of which concerns Gibson in any real way. The company plans to sell just 4,000 of the blue silverburst models worldwide starting December 7th. The price for perfection: US$2,500. Can't get one then? A more general edition will be coming to a guitar store in January 2008. The company is betting its detractors will change their tune when they see and hear it. But then, that's exactly what it was built for in the first place.

philips dvd player offers ipod dock, 9-inch screen

Perfect for a kitchen countertop or any other place where you don’t need a big screen, Philips DCP951/37 Docking Entertainment System moves away from the clamshell case design to a flat, one-piece design that can stand up on its own. The player features a 9-inch diagonal LCD screen and built-in stereo speakers.

A handy iPod dock/charger pops out of the side of the player, keeping it out of harm’s way until you need it. In addition to playback from DVD or iPod, there’s a built-in SD/MMC card slot if you prefer to keep your media on memory cards. It supports a wide variety of playback formats including DVD, DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW, (S)VCD, DivX & MPEG4 videos.

Since the player’s DNA comes from Philips portable DVD line, it’s also got a rechargeable battery, so you can take it on the road. You should get enough time to watch about 2.5 hours of video on a single charge.

The only real downside that I can see to this player is the displays less-than-stellar 640×220 resolution. For a 9-inch screen that’s pretty darned weak. As long as you can deal with the low display resolution, the DCP951 looks like a good fit for tight spaces and can perform double-duty as a portable.

You can find it over on Amazon for $199.99.

The world-renowned electronic giant brand, Sony Electronics, has proudly launched its new DMX-WL1 and DMX-DVD BRAVIA Link Modules. Combining all the latest features, both these newly launched products are expected to give their best performance.

“Now you can customize compatible flat-panel BRAVIA HDTV sets with great features without reconfiguring your entire home theater set up,” said Jeff Goldstein, vice president of marketing for Sony Electronics’ consumer television group. “Each link module conveniently integrates into the TV’s menu system for easy use while eliminating the need for another set top box, component, or remote control.”

Sony DMX-WL1 is a two-piece system that is capable of transmitting high definition video and BRAVIA TV compatible audio wirelessly. On the other hand, Sony DMX-DVD has been designed to bring the functionalities of a DVD player directly to the set.

The new Sony DMX-WL1 and DMX-DVD BRAVIA Link Modules are priced at $ 150 and $ 200 respectively.

Electric Guitar Parts Lessons

There are three main sections zoomed in the picture; the Headstock, the Neck, and the Body. The headstock holds the Tuner Posts around which the strings are wrapped and terminated. The Tuners are knobs that (or this, whichever) increase or decrease the tension on the string wrapped around the tuner posts (tuning the sound made by the strings). Note that some electric guitars may have different looking tuners, and some may even have three tuner keys on opposite sides. Even though they may look different, they work in the same manner. The Nut guides the strings to the tuner posts and maintains the height of the strings.

The length of the Neck depends on the scale of the guitar and the number of frets it has. The back of the neck could be "C" shaped, or "V" shaped (sideways < if you compare it to the letter C). The front of the neck is the Fingerboard or Fretboard, that contains the Frets embedded in notches along its surface. The Strings run down the neck over the frets. The height of the strings over the frets is called the Action; if the action is too high the strings are harder to press down, if the action is too low the strings may rattle against the frets muffling the notes. The neck usually has "dot" markers on the top and the side facing the player, showing the position of the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th (which has two dots), 15th, 17th, 19th, 21st, and 24th (which also has two dots) fret. Note that not all electric guitars have 24 frets. Those guitars that do have 24 frets will have smaller spacing between all the other frets, which is may make things a little difficult for large hands and fingers.

The body of the electric guitar (this instrument is used in every form of music, from Classical to Heavy Metal) has one, two or three Pickups under the strings. These electro-magnetic coils "pickup" the vibration from the strings and send it to the amp. There are two varieties of pickups, single-coil and humbucker (dual-coil), and electric guitars have different combinations of these pickups in the three possible positions - closest to the neck, in the middle, and furthest from the neck. A Pickup Selector Switch allows you to choose which pickup will be active, some models even allow you to select combinations of pickups for unique sounds. The strings terminate in the Bridge, some versions also have a Whammy Bar to create Tremolo effects (by rapidly pushing the bar in and out, changing the angle of the bridge). Volume and Tone control knobs are also present on the body, allowing you to make minor changes to your guitars sound without having to fiddle with the amp. A Cable Connector allows you to connect a cable from your electric guitar to your amplifier or effects pedal.

Canon Digital IXUS 65 - Touch Control Dial
This also applies to the back of the camera. The first thing you notice is the really large screen; there is hardly any room for the buttons. Canon has found a clever solution to this with the Touch Control Dial. You can set the sensitivity, flash setting, record speed, self timer and the macro and landscape settings with this dial. Canon fans will find the well known FUNC button in the middle of the Touch Control Dial, which you can use to get to the most important settings quickly. You may have to search a bit in the beginning, but once you have learnt your way around a quick review button and the functions concealed behind it you won't want anything else. The indispensable Direct Print and Share buttons are above the Touch Control Dial. If you connect the Canon IXUS 65 to a computer or mobile printer, such as the Canon SELPHY, you can send photos directly. The LED on the bottom left of the click wheel indicates if writing or reading is taking place on the memory card, if the digital camera is ready to take a shot or if there is a risk of blurring caused by movement. Finally, there is the menu button and a button to switch between the various screen reproductions.

Canon Digital IXUS 65 - Metal case
There are not many buttons to contend with, which makes everything easier to oversee. The most important functions are easy to approach. Canon Digital IXUS 65 is not just attractive; it also feels good when you hold it. Thanks to the metal casing, this camera feels sturdy and you can take it everywhere with you. However, it does scratch easily as does the beautiful 3 inch screen. It would be wise to buy a case to keep the Canon IXUS 65 in if you want to keep the camera in your bag or pocket. After all, you will want to keep a showpiece like this in top condition for as long as possible.

Canon Digital IXUS 65 | Digital Camera Review | Camera

Canon IXUS 65 camera - Lens
The Canon IXUS 65 looks particularly attractive from the front. The polished silver gives the camera allure. Naturally, the 5.8-17.4 f/2.8 - f4.9 Canon lens takes centre stage. The range corresponds to 35 - 105 mm in 35mm format. It is a nice small lens that can come and position itself very quickly. Around the lens is the typical designer's ring, characteristic of the IXUS series, in which a microphone has been placed. The little LED above the ring acts as an assistance illuminator for the auto focus and red eye reduction and as a light for the self timer. The flash is above right and all in all, the front looks attractive and streamlined.

Canon Digital IXUS 65 camera - A/V & USB connections
On the left hand side, there are interfaces for the A/V and USB connections, neatly concealed behind a rubber. Underneath is a metal eye that can be used either for a wrist band or, if you want to be trendy, for hanging the Canon IXUS 65 around your neck. Underneath the camera is a plastic universal tripod connection and the door to the battery and the Secure Digital memory card. There is also an interface for an AC adapter in the door that is sealed with a plastic flap when not in use.

Canon IXUS 65 camera - Swtich
The main switch is in the middle of the top of the Canon Digital IXUS 65 camera. To the left is the switch for the record setting and playing back the images. On the far right is a clearly visible shutter release surrounded by the zoom switch. Finally, a small speaker has been integrated into the casing. The top side is easy to oversee and has a streamlined design.

The Canon Digital Rebel XT digital SLR camera

This article will serve as a Canon Digital Rebel XT review, and highlight to you some of the best features, along with shortcomings of this professional SLR camera.

Some interesting points about the Canon Digital Rebel XT were apparent as I reviewed the camera. On the upside, it has a very fast start-up speed, taking just a fraction of a second to power up. It also produces fantastic looking pictures. However, it also has its downsides. For example, it has a lightweight plastic body which isn't ergonomically satisfying. In addition, it has a limited continuous-shooting mode, which may be restrictive in some photo situations. If you're thinking of buying this digital camera, you'll do well to take these factors into consideration.

In any case, let’s now jump right into the review and take a good look at the features of the Canon Digital Rebel XT.

Design and Construction

In terms of dimensions, the Canon Digital Rebel XT measures 4.98" by 3.71" by 2.52" (WHD) and weighs just 1.07 pounds. The body itself is made of solid black material (it's also available in silver) and looks very durable.

Holding the camera in your hands, you can tell that it has a nice, sturdy feeling and can be held very stably when shooting tricky shots. If the 'look' of the camera is an important consideration for you, you'll be glad to know that the Canon Digital Rebel XT fits the bill. It really looks like a professional digital SLR, with its big body size and excellent design.

Optics and Resolution

The Canon Digital Rebel XT is equipped with a powerful 3x optical zoom lens and offers with a 8.0 megapixel resolution. You can fit a range of wide angle or telephoto lenses on to the body for shooting any subject.

If you're particular about the optics within the device, the Canon Digital Rebel XT has an ISO range of 100 to 1600, as well as an aperture range of f3.5/f5.6 (wide/tele). As for shutter speeds, they range from 30 - 1/4000 sec.

I had the chance to take some test photos using the Canon Digital Rebel XT. The resulting pictures were nothing short of stunning - great color tones, accurate hues and subtle shadows.

User Controls

The user controls in the Canon Digital Rebel XT can be accessed through the 1.8 inch LCD screen. The controls might take a little getting used to - however, I did not have any problems reaching commonly used functions like flash control or image viewing.

And in case you're wondering, this digital camera has manual controls which let you have better exposure control. You can also have fun with the various focusing and manual options. The Canon Digital Rebel XT also does not come with a movie mode - I wouldn't expect it in a professional SLR model - so if you want to record videos, then you may have to look elsewhere.

Battery Life

The Canon Digital Rebel XT uses proprietary lithium batteries. What about the battery life? I can say its pretty decent. I managed to go through a full day's shooting with a single battery charge. You may of course want to invest in an extra battery - just in case, especially if you're going overseas on a vacation.

Storage and Transfer

In terms of storage, the Canon Digital Rebel XT accepts CompactFlash Type I/II memory cards. You’ll certainly want to purchase a higher capacity card to ensure you don't run out of storage space easily. Personally, I have a five 1GB memory cards. Yes, I know that's going overboard a little - but it's always good to be safe than sorry, especially since the Rebel XT can take 8 megapixel photos.

Image transfers are done via a speedy USB 2.0 interface - so rest assured that your photos will get downloaded to your PC pretty fast.

Shortcomings

The bad points about the Canon Digital Rebel XT? Well, here are two shortcomings I’d point out to you. This digital camera will sell many more units if they were corrected. Firstly, the device has a lightweight plastic body which isn't ergonomically satisfying - a fact which many professional photographers will concur with. Secondly, it has a limited continuous-shooting mode, which may be restrictive in some photo situations.

Conclusion

Despite its shortcomings, the Canon Digital Rebel XT is one heck of a digital camera. Whether you’re a beginner in digital photography, or a seasoned professional, you may want to consider buying this little baby. Take it with you anywhere, snap as many photos as you can - just experiment and learn!

Share Your Pictures at SmugMug

If you've tons of digital photos to share and but are not sure which photo sharing site to choose, then do take a look at SmugMug. I've been a happy user of their photo sharing service for two years now and I've been most impressed by it. The service allows you to upload, arrange and share your photos, as well as buy prints or burn picture CDs.

Design of the Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS Digital Camera

Possibly the saddest change with this new model is that Canon omitted an optical viewfinder from the IXUS 860. This was probably done to make room for the larger screen, but it's an unfortunate compromise. On the upside, Canon spruced up the look of the camera's back. This includes the newer version of Canon's multi-controller pad. It's more responsive and a raised ring around the edge gives it a better feel.

Plus, when you rest your thumb in any particular direction on the pad, a graphic appears on the LCD to show you what you'd do if you press fully. This helps you to keep your eyes on the screen when you have to change a setting while shooting.

Design of the Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS Digital Camera

Probably the only real ergonomic flaw on the IXUS 860 is that there's no convenient place to rest your thumb. So, while all the shooting controls can be accessed through buttons on the right side of the camera, one-handed shooting can be annoying as you're forced to put your thumb on top of the right edge of the LCD screen--thereby blocking some of what you're trying to frame in the picture.

Though the camera's optical image stabilization (hence the IS in the name) should help keep things steady, you may welcome the use of a second hand, since the IXUS 860 weighs in at a somewhat 160g.

Features of the Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS Digital Camera

As usual with Canon's IXUS cameras, you won't find any manual exposure controls. Instead you have to rely on the camera's exposure compensation if you want to tweak the camera's automatic exposure, or resort to one of the camera's 10 scene modes to handle out-of-the-ordinary shooting scenarios.

Flash exposure compensation lets you control the output of the flash, so the flash doesn't overpower your subjects if you're too close--a nice touch that's not found in all compact cameras.
Performance of the Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS Digital Camera

We were very impressed by the IXUS 860's performance in our lab tests. It took the camera 0.9 second to start up and capture its first JPEG. Thereafter, the camera took 1.6 seconds between subsequent JPEGs with the flash turned off, and 2.4 seconds between JPEGs with the flash turned on.

Shutter lag measured a stunning 0.4 second in our high-contrast test and 0.7 second in our low-contrast test, which respectively mimic bright and dim shooting conditions. In our continuous shooting test, the IXUS 860 captured 1.3 frames per second regardless of image size or compression.

Image quality of the Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS Digital Camera

The IXUS 860 yields very high-quality images with accurate colors and tons of detail, and which are very clean at lower ISOs. The automatic white balance does a very good job of neutralizing colors in different kinds of lighting, but with incandescent lighting, its images have a very slight warm cast.

Some people prefer this, since it gives a natural look, as incandescent lighting does give off a warm glow. However, if you prefer a more neutral look in these situations, the tungsten preset does a great job of serving up neutral images.

Canon keeps ISO noise well under control through ISO 200. You probably won't notice much in the way of noise even when viewing ISO 200 images on your monitor, which tends to be more revealing of such noise than prints. At ISO 400, noise becomes readily apparent on monitors, but Canon's noise reduction algorithms manage to smooth it out so it doesn't take on that fine, snowy look that some cameras--including some older Canons--tend towards. Plus, most of this noise should become minimized when making inkjet prints.

At ISO 800, noise is much more apparent and should show up in prints, but Canon does a good job of preserving some fine detail, and images show impressive shadow detail for such high sensitivity in a compact camera. Images at ISO 1,600 are very noisy with the IXUS 860, showing large, grainy noise. Most fine detail is lost, giving images a soft look, and a large portion of shadow detail goes by the wayside. Still, given that this camera has a small sensor, the results are somewhat impressive. The images may be usable for small prints, or for use at small sizes on the Web.

Canon's IXUS 860 is a worthy addition to the company's IXUS line. Experienced photographers looking for a pocket camera will lament the fact that the camera doesn't have any manual exposure controls, but if you don't feel the need to tinker with your camera's settings and aren't caught up in the pointless megapixel race, you'll likely be very pleased with this point-and-shoot.

Panasonic Lumix Digital Camera

I know recently we’ve been talking a lot about digital cameras, but it’s because I’ve had it on my mind. I just purchased a Panasonic Lumix FX55, and I’ve been fiddling around with it and using it.

It had been high time for me to replace my old digital camera, which I had been using for about six years. It was large and bulky, and one of my friends, when I pulled the old camera out to use, joked, “What is that, your fax machine?”

Alljokes aside, I knew I wanted a new camera that was sleek, slim, and good at taking pictures. I’ve always been drawn to the Panasonic brand for its consistently high quality, and here was a new line of cameras from them that were quite sleek (especially in black!), pretty slim, and excellent for photography.

The display LCD is very large, and despite a month of use now, there are no scratches, so the material for the screen is quite strong. Also, the buttons are convenient to use, with an easy button for deleting pictures. The function wheel at the top allows you to switch easily among the various modes, from taking regular pictures, to recording videos, to viewing your pictures.

My only complaint is that when you take a vertical picture, the camera replays the photo horizontally, thus reducing the image size. Some other cameras I’ve seen automatically adjust the playback view depending on whether you hold the camera horizontally or vertically, where if you take a vertical picture, the image is played back vertically when you hold the digital camera that way.

In any case, the Panasonic Lumix FX55 is an excellent camera, and I highly recommend it as a digital camera gift for those looking to give one of these handy pieces of technology this Christmas and holiday season.

Digital Camera Gifts
July 28, 2007

As a lot of people go on vacation this summer, a great gift to give is a digital camera. Why let your acquaintances pay so much for disposable cameras and the cost of developing film and getting prints when the eventual cost will add up to surpass that of a budget digital camera?

Digital cameras are great for travelers and those fun summer get-togethers. They can capture fun times at the beach or park or a visit to Disneyland or other theme parks. You can look back on your photos on your computer, burn them onto a CD, or order prints of them online or at your local photo developer.

They also make great gifts for recent college graduates because they will have many memorable experiences on campus and will want to remember them. Be sure to warn them not to post incriminating photos online on Facebook or MySpace because they might regret it later!

Sony DSC-H3 Camera

Sony is introducing a super-zoom digital camera small enough to carry to any school activity. The new 8-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-H3 camera has a powerful 10x optical zoom lens for those close-up shots you don’t want to miss, and yet features a super compact form so you can take the camera along anywhere.

The model features high-definition component output, putting a high-resolution spin on the family slideshow. Families can see their digital photos the same way they watch their favorite TV shows – in full 1080 HD resolution.

The DSC-H3 model includes a variety of features such as a powerful Carl Zeiss ® 10x optical zoom lens, a long-range flash that lights up subjects farther from the camera, and a 2.5-inch LCD screen that automatically adjusts for correctly exposed, sharp photos.

Equipped with Sony’s Dynamic Range Optimizer, originally developed for the Alpha digital SLR system, the new camera can analyze captured image data, and instantly determine the best exposure and tonality of each picture before JPEG compression.

The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H3 camera will ship next month for about $300.

TV vs online TV?

We're debating the merits of TV vs online TV as a venue for original scripted comedy and drama with "English Dave," who regularly blogs an insider's view of the ups and downs of UK screenwriting in Was it something I wrote?

Dave kicked off the debate in his post Internet Hype?

"I'm about to commit heresy. For the next twenty years at least, unless a HUGE player gets involved, TV will still be the primary method of delivering scripted entertainment."

He goes on to raise several crucial and thought-provoking points about the future of TV vs online for comedy and drama and of course, we couldn't resist replying and arguing the case that "online is an ideal venue for scripted comedy and drama."

Click below for Dave's full post and our in-depth reponse, covering innovation in funding and production, new online formats and how the the relationship between broadcast TV and online TV is developing.

From English Dave's post Internet Hype?

I'm about to commit heresy. For the next twenty years at least, unless a HUGE player gets involved, TV will still be the primary method of delivering scripted entertainment. Forget all the 'let's do the show right here' bollocks.

There, I said it. Only small stones please and not the face!

Why do I think that? Because despite all the marketing hype, most people still like to sit down in their favourite armchair, watch their big screen HDD with dolby and tune out to their favourite programme.

Yep, to marketers the internet is cool and hip and trendy. But marketers deal in product, not entertainment or the reason why we like certain types of entertainment. With the marketers it's all about trends and statistics. They see a huge explosion in the use of the internet, a huge decrease in the TV viewer numbers on network primetime, put 2 and 2 together and get 17.

The internet is not the future of delivering scripted entertainment. It is the future of 'catch up' tv, 'dang I missed that' tv and 'I wonder what that's like' tv.

Watching TV is part of our social and cultural fabric. Prime time network ratings have gone down because people now have better things to do than sit down and make an appointment to watch shit. Pure and simple. Putting that same shit on the internet isn't going to make a whole heck of a lot of difference.

That's not to say that a ratings success purely on the internet isn't possible. Or internet streamed direct to the TV. And if someone has the balls to put up the cash for decent production values and promotion it might happen. But I think it will be the exception rather than the rule.

Sure, the networks can make a good deal of incremental income from the internet, but TV will still rule. Mass Entertaimnent has a lot more to do with why we view it than how we view it. But apart from porn and Youtube most of us don't want it huddled over our computers. So the Tv will still rule. The internet will be another way of feeding the TV, like another one million channels to surf. More fragmentation, more crap.

It's going to take a hell of a show to persuade the money men that a network level production value show on the internet can attract the same or more viewers.

Our response

Hi Dave,

No-one’s anticipating that broadcast television will disappear, any more than cinema did when TV arrived, so it’s entirely possible that indeed “TV will still be the primary method of delivering scripted entertainment.”

But that’s actually a very narrow claim and the future – and 20 years is a long time on the Internet – is much more nuanced than an either/or scenario.

One of the US producers that we interviewed, Marc Campbell, CEO of the Independent Comedy Network studio, said that, “Our view is that there is a new rung in the content development ladder, and we fill that gap. We are creating a cost-effective portfolio of entertainment properties, each of which has the potential to migrate up the entertainment food chain.”

There’s a lot of innovation going on in the US market around how to finance and produce lower-budget Internet shows that can either recoup their funding directly online and/or be picked up for television. People with online experience are teaming up with Hollywood execs who know how to cut the deals, so you see someone like Kathleen Grace, who created The Burg (www.theburg.tv) getting together with Mike Eisner’s Vuguru to make The All-For-Nots (www.theallfornots.com). It’s a mockumentary about an indie band on tour, but shot on the road with the band doing some real-life gigs, like at the SXSW festival. They’ve liberated the sit-com from the studio, so it’s hardly a case of “putting that same shit on the internet.”

At the high end of the budget range, you can see a production such as In The Motherhood (www.inthemotherhood.com). This is now in its second season, completely funded by Unilever’s Suave (shampoo) and Sprint (mobile operator) at a per-minute budget on a par with a broadcast sit-com. They’ve hired household name talent (Leah Remini from CBS’ The King of Queens and Jenny McCarthy) and they believe that online TV is ideal for their very mainstream target audience of busy mothers, who don’t have time for television but can find a spare five minutes for comedy directly based on their own lives. The show runs a competition for viewers to contribute story ideas that are polished by pro scriptwriters.

You wrote: “unless a HUGE player gets involved.” Which KIND of huge player is missing? Some companies are further ahead than others in embracing online TV, as you’d expect, but all the sectors are represented.

Whenever people ask if online TV is working, we simply point to recommissions like In The Motherhood that are funded by major corporations such as Unilever. Much of this is simply bypassing the US networks entirely. Many of them are setting up their own online production outfits, such as Warner Bros Studio 2.0, but they could find it tough to compete with the more nimble start-ups , particularly when the talent and talent agencies see an opportunity to go direct to the public with their own productions. Meanwhile, News Corp and NBCU have set up Hulu at a distributor – and possibly a video search engine to compete with Google. There are huge players all across online TV, just in a range of positions in the whole business – production, distribution etc.

Perhaps the main flaw in your argument is that on the one hand you expect the Internet to deliver catch-up TV, but you’re also saying that much of broadcast TV is poor quality. If so, then what’s there to catch up on?

An alternative view is that the Internet is going to be the ideal venue to pilot and incubate new scripted shows. You allude to this in saying, “The internet will be another way of feeding the TV.”

In the US market, there seems to be a shift in favour of more reality programming, partly because of the writers’ strike and partly because the networks like the lower production costs. It’s easy to imagine a scenario for the 2008-09 season with a slew of reality on the TV and people looking online for comedy and drama, at exactly the time when the new online studios have a slate of shows up and running. Marc Campbell’s ICN alone aims to pilot 40 shows and they’re far from alone.

How about a future when TV is dominant, but in a vicious circle of stagnant or declining audiences and ad revenues that fund ever less appealing shows? And when online is in a virtuous circle of successfully incubating a new approach to production, across the whole range of budget levels, and innovating ways to engage the people that we should stop calling viewers? GM has just pulled out $1.5 BILLION dollars from TV in favour of online advertising. Which way is the wind blowing?

You’re right about funding for top quality production values and promotion. If there’s a particularly weak link in the chain at the moment, it’s the production company being able to tell people that a new show exists and is worth watching. There’s way too much reliance on online users telling friends “virally.”

You say that “Watching TV is part of our social and cultural fabric.” Yes, but ever less so as audiences have fragmented, as you acknowledge. If anything, online has the greater potential in the future to re-assemble those fragmented individuals into at least mid-size (not mass) audiences that have similar interests or outlooks. It’s no accident that MySpace and Bebo have both emerged as commissioners and are closing sponsor deals. If larger audiences can be re-created, surely larger funding will follow.

In the UK, it’s a slightly different picture at the moment, as much of the activity is between broadcasters, particularly the BBC, and major indies, such as Endemol. So far, we’re seeing an alternative approach to the interactivity, with the Endemol teen drama Signs of Life (www.bbc.co.uk/signsoflife) including gameplay as part of the video. BBC Switch has commissioned several online projects from Lime Pictures’ Conker Media and Channel 4 has gone for a third season of Dubplate Drama, which has a significant online element.

However, it’s very likely that the US models will emerge here in some form. In February, we saw Mindshare, who put together the funding for In The Motherhood, presenting the show to indie producers at an InSync evening in Soho. They are already looking for producers to work with. Meanwhile, Unilever’s Sure Girl deodorant is sponsoring Sofia’s Diary on Bebo.

And it’s also very likely that the highly innovative UK indie production scene will once again emerge with some more killer formats that go global.

The main difference for writers interested in creating online TV is there’s a more immediate relationship with the audience and a particular need to take account of and gain experience of the various opportunities for interactivity.

And as for slumping in front of the big screen... Yes, viewers will continue to do just that, particularly for live sports and top-quality drama. But the same households are full of other screens – more TVs, PCs, consoles and mobiles...

To conclude, we believe that online is an ideal venue for scripted comedy and drama.

Go get this sandwich maker and then go make some sandwiches

And it's been sitting under her desk for five months now. So today, I convinced her to go to Whole Foods with me so that we could pick up some food and make some sandwiches. And DAYUM were they good.

You butter the outside of the bread and then put whatever you want in there. My first sandwich had roast beef, provolone, and a little bit of horseradish. My second sandwich had turkey, pesto, sliced tomato, and fresh mozzarella. They were SO good and toasty and SO easy. For those of you who have kids, they will love it.

Seriously, it's only 20 bucks. Go get one. I'll wait...

Sanyo EM-U1000 Microwave Oven

An ideal microwave oven for a small space, Sanyo's EM-U1000 takes up very little space on the countertop while offering more interior capacity than you might expect. With a 0.7-cubic-foot interior and a 10-5/8-inch glass turntable, this model can handle most plates with the possible exception of very large dinner plates. If your plates are very large, you might consider measuring them or better yet taking one to the store and testing it on this model to ensure a proper fit.

Although quite low in price, the EM-U1000 doesn't skip a beat when it comes to features. Included are many typical conveniences you would expect to find on even larger microwave ovens.Ten power levels and 800 watts of power provide plenty of options and fast reheating. Six instant-on keys are programmed to heat exact portion sizes of commonly microwaved foods with just one touch.

This model can be used to defrost as well as cook and reheat small portions of food. Although a dedicated/automatic defrost program is not provided, manually programming a medium-low power level will allow you to achieve acceptable results for thawing most frozen foods.

Available in black or white, this compact microwave oven has an attractive and unusual curved window design. We found Sanyo's bargain-priced EM-U1000 offered for sale in Best Buy stores as well as at other big box retailers, so make sure to shop around for this neat little microwave.

Pros: Offers a turntable, 10 versatile power levels, six pre-programmed settings and digital controls
Cons: Lacks a specific defrost program and sensor for automatically reheating any portion size

Warranty
1 year

What does the Microwave do to your food?

When one wants to (re)heat food or cook it, they simply open the door of the microwave and keep in the food inside. Then after closing the door, the select the setting from the available controls which includes time and heat levels.

Soon the microwave buzzes to life and as seen in most microwaves, the turntable inside starts to rotate. Your food is on top of this turning glass plate and it causes an even heating effect.

At the end of the preset time, the microwave stops and usually emits an audible sound for you to know that the cycle is over. That is it. Your food is ready (either heated up or cooked).

You may wonder - is it that simple? Yes it is. But as with lots of devices a microwave has its own share of pros and cons.

Understanding a Microwave

There could be two or more types of microwave ovens in the market. This classification would be based on the operating logic. There are

a) Mechanical switch based Microwave ovens &

b) Digital logic based Microwave ovens.

The former has usually 2 knobs. The timer knob is spring loaded and upon turning to a specific time value (e.g. 1 minute), it slowly starts to unwind to the “0″ position mark. The knob is calibrated in such a manner that the time to unwind the spring matches the time marked on the dial.

Similarly we have the temperature setting knob, which is pretty much similar to the load selection knobs on old washing machines. The heat levels of microwave ovens are usually selectable in “watts”.

A more advanced version is the digital microwave where all operations are controlled by touch switches and all the settings are reflected by digital displays.

Based on the build of the microwave there are again two types:

a) Plastic body microwave and

b) Metal body microwave

What not to do in a Microwave oven

> Never keep anything metallic in nature inside the microwave. You would end up spoiling your microwave as metallic objects cause sparking effect within a microwave oven.

> Do not cook eggs as they can explode within the microwave.

> Do not fill containers to the brim and try to heat or cook them. They will boil over and stain your microwave’s interiors and it would be tough to clean them.

> Do not use too high or too low settings.

> Do not clean your microwave with solvents or acids.

> Do not try to repair it yourself. Always seek a professional help. Microwave is dangerous to humans if exposed for a prolonged period of time.

> Never ever try to put electronic items such as mobile phones inside a microwave to remove moisture. Microwave can cause irreversible damage to silicon chips.

How you can use your device effectively

> Read the manual prior to usage. Unlike other devices, the microwave manual can teach you lot of important details.

> Try reading some microwave cookbooks for new recipes.

> Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap water and keep it aerated to remove food odor.

Quick facts about Microwave

- Commonly used for reheating food and beverages

- Capacity is measured in litres (like refrigerators)

- Heating units are measures in Watts

- Can be used to cook food - but may require a different approach to cooking

- Consumes less oil than traditional cooking

- Nutrients are preserved in microwave cooking

- Not all types of food can be made in microwave. Examples include but are not limited to:

> Items which require deep frying like pappads - exception is Lijjat pappad

> Pizza - which would require a conventional oven

> Cake and other such items

About Generators

As the number of industrial activity grows day by day the requirement for uninterrupted power supply has become the need of the hour. In this goal Generators has taken a more advanced step leaving behind the inverter which was in vogue earlier.

However, buying generators may be little difficult if one isn’t clear in purpose. To get uninterrupted power one need to have a clear idea regarding the machine size. While there is no such universally regarded ‘right size’, in most cases it depends upon the buyer’s choice. For example, power consumption of a full-fledged office does usually surpass that of a household in a large way. Thus, the emergency power generators which provide just enough wattage to operate all your essential equipment may not be enough for an office.

While subsequent overworking can damage the generator in a great way, under-performance of a generator could harm one economically. To know the exact quantity of generators power consumption one could take the assistance of ‘ammeter’. Qualified electrician can measure the exact level of power consumption in this way. After having a clear idea regarding your requirement one should buy a generator which can produce 20% more power than your requirement. While buying this way one is free to add some other small devices according to requirements.

Regarding the price factor portable generators cost lesser than their fixed counterparts. These machines are easy to handle and can be transported to remote places. They however, provide significantly lesser quantity of power. Buying standby generator could not be a successful deal unless one’s budget includes installation and a transfer switch creating a big whole in pocket.

Some of the buyers prefer to have used generators. It’s pointed out by experts that used generators assist in a major way by providing almost similar quantity of power without creating much negative effect on your bank account. Since standby generators definition wise, are used only to run basic instruments one might find 10- or 20-year old models with only a few hundred hours of use or even lesser. However, used generators require well-maintenance. It could offer solutions over a long period of time only when they are maintained properly.

Product Review: Insignia 2GB MP3 Player

We have been in the market for an MP3 player for quite some time. I had been checking Ebay, the Apple website, and comparison shopping for months now. I was trying to find an affordable MP3 player that actually had some bells and whistles on it. Unfortunately, an MP3 player with the features that I wanted was going to cost us a lot of money, and we just did not have it.

As luck would have it, Insignia contacted me and gave us the opportunity to review their 2GB MP3 player. This player actually has all of the bells and whistles and is just over the hundred dollar mark. In the MP3 player world, that is quite a bargain! If you are looking for an MP3 player, but don’t have a lot of Christmas cash, I would highly recommend this player.

This player, in all honesty, is everything I could want out of an MP3 player. It is super light, weighing in at only 2.4 ounces, and has a nice sleek design to it. 2GB of storage translates into approximately 500 songs, 2,000 photos, 25 audiobooks, or 7 movies. It also has a spot for a memory card, should 2GB of storage not be enough for you.

This player is well-designed and adding music to it was as simple as downloading a CD of software and attaching the USB cable to our computer. Within minutes, I had uploaded a good portion of my music collection and it was ready to go.

As a mom, who rarely has any quiet time to myself, I had to create times for myself to actually be able to listen to it. I figured that while I was out battling the crowds, doing my holiday shopping, would be a great time for me to actually have some peace & quiet. It was perfect and I was able to tune out all of the chaos, making waiting in lines at Walmart much more pleasurable for me. I admit, I did receive some funny looks, but I held back the need to burst into song out in public.

My husband may not agree that he has enjoyed the player as much because he bears witness to my theatrical singing (which is truly a treat, I am sure!), but he doesn’t complain. Only a fool would complain when I am trying to make scrubbing pots or washing kid’s clothing enjoyable.

The Insignia 2GB MP3 player is a great bargain and a wonderful treat for any mom. For more information on this product, please visit this link to get the full scoop. It does many more cool things, but the main thing for me was to be able to listen to my music collection. Those looking for other features, like being able to watch movies or view pictures, will not be disappointed with this player. These are just added bonuses for this mom!

Many thanks to Insignia for allowing us to have the opportunity to enjoy such a great product!

Mp3 Player If You Are On The Move

An Mp3 player is also known as a digital audio player, and it has become a regular fixture in our everyday lives. Everybody seems to have one these days. Walking the dog, at the gym, traveling to work, the idea that you can carry your entire music library with you anywhere is extremely appealing to most people.

MP3 players have made music easily accessible to everyone. You can simply download the songs from the free download sites and save them in your player and carry with you everywhere. Nothing could be better when you are stuck in a massive traffic jam and don`t know how to while away your time.

Mp3 stands for Moving Picture Experts Group layer III, and can be seen as a technology which audio data can fit smaller memory space, without any loss to audio quality. Raw audio data is normally very large and difficult to use on portable devices because of the lack of available storage. A standard audio CD can hold up to 80 minutes of audio data. With Mp3, about ten times more audio data can be stored in memory of the same size.

Although you will find many mp3 player brands in the market, there are mainly three Mp3 player types, mostly based on memory capacity. The Mp3 player with hard drive has the highest capacity and is often called a Jukebox Mp3 player. Examples are iPod video, Sony Walkman. The Micro Mp3 player with hard drive has a lower capacity and is lighter than an Mp3 player with hard drive. Examples are iPod Mini, Zen Micro (Creative Labs). The Mp3 player with flash memory is the smallest in size with the lowest capacity, and is very light. An example is iPod Nano.

An Mp3 player with hard drive is good for travel or for those compelled to be away from their computers for long periods of time. It is ideal for listening in the living room, and it can be connected to external speakers. An Mp3 player with flash memory is useful while jogging or at the gym because of its lightness.

Mp3 players were introduced in the early nineties, and ever since then, there has been a running argument over audio quality. A lot of people feel that Mp3 compression has an adverse effect on the quality of the sound; the others argue that the Mp3 audio format just removes the frequency of audio data that cannot be possibly heard by people, so there is no real loss in the sound quality.

More and more new features are being added to the Mp3 player with advancing technology. Some have built in digital photograph albums, as in the later generation iPod, and you can download and access your pictures while you are on the move. Some have analogue radio and digital radio receivers.

It is usually believed that MP4 is just a modern and updated version of MP3. But it is not so at all. It is something very different in its features. MP3 can be considered to be of a particular category belonging to audio formats, whereas MP4 is considered to be in a container format. However in spite of these differences, mp3 files can be run in either of the players.

One thing you will do well to remember is that your Mp3 player sound quality is only as good as the headphones you are listening with. So do spend a little time and money on superior quality headphones.

Whirlpool Espresso refrigerator - with integrated coffee maker

Who said the icebox is just a place to store food & beverages? Well, it certainly wasn’t LG Electronics. The world’s first interactive frig is to debut next month in the US. The LG refrigerator is connected to a satellite and provides real-time weather forecasts and with its 38cm TFT LCD TV screen it can also be used as a frame for digital photos or a board to write digital memos.

The side-by-side fridge has the capacity to display up to 50 preloaded cooking recipes on the TV screen. A smaller, 10cm LCD screen features an interactive polar bear that reports the temperature, isn’t that cute. Did Coke have anything to do with that? They didn’t forget anything with this frig: it can be connected to a DVD player, USB drive, TV or FM radio. I think it’s high time we all had an interactive frig. Can I have mine in pink & can it say ‘You’re beautiful’ every time I pass by? Cost, a cool $3500.

Whirlpool Espresso refrigerator - with integrated coffee maker

The newest Whirlpool Espresso refrigerator is the first ever side-by-side fridge-freezer which has a coffee maker and an integrated water filter meaning you can make your coffee and espresso, and add the milk all in one place. Designed by Whirlpool engineers mainly for the British market where people consume close to 70 million cups of coffee everyday, the unique Espresso side by side refrigerator has combined a coffee machine and a fridge freezer, freeing up your precious countertop space by eliminating the needs for a separate coffee maker. The professional espresso machine makes perfect coffee and takes very little space from the freezer door, and the insulation ensures that the fridge performance is not affected. The refrigerator features Whirlpool unique 6th sense technology which ensures the ultimate in fridge-freezer performance, keeping food fresher for longer in more hygienic conditions by consistently monitoring and adjusting the temperature. If a fridge or a freezer door has been kept open, the temperature is brought back to the preselected level five times faster than in conventional fridges by circulating cold air. Unique In-Door-Ice system offers up to 25% more usable freezer space than other models with ice makers. Internal water filter supplies fresh, cool water at a touch, safely filtering out impurities in the water and giving cool filtered water directly to the dispenser on the front of the product. More environmentally friendly, convenient and cheaper than bottled water. Unique espresso maker is Whirlpool truly revolutionary idea. This Espresso coffee maker integrated into your side by side fridge freezer is not only perfect for the coffee pod system, but can also dispense hot water for other beverages. The A+ energy rated Espresso refrigerator comes in easy to clean finger proof stainless steel finish, with contoured doors, vacation mode and child lockable controls. It does not need to be defrosted and has Microban filter ensuring total anti-bacterial protection throughout the fridge. The super premium side by side Whirlpool Espresso refrigerator with 20 cu. ft. capacity will be available sometime in January of 2008. Whirlpool.

Caple CAFF22 American Style Fridge Freezer

Here’s something to brighten up a dull kitchen! It’s the CAFF22 American style fridge freezer from Caple.

The CAFF22 has a glass front and black trim - and fortunately for those with more restrained tastes, it’s available in many other colours including Ebony (black), Bride (white), and Pewter (silver).

Despite being an American fridge freezer, the CAFF22 is True European counter depth (597mm) so it will fit in our kitchens. The freezer is frost-free (so no more de-frosting), and is 215 litres in size, and the fridge has a capacity of 395 litres.

All the usual American style mod cons are here, including the ice and water dispenser which will provide filtered water, ice, and ice cubes. It is also A rated for energy consumption - so it’s green as well as pink!

The CAFF22 fridge freezer retails at £2,583.
